The schooling system has for the most part improved over time in different ways all over the world. Today many people in Africa can finally go to school. As a South African we have come from the Apartheid schooling system to a more inclusive environment. In my family, I am part of the second generation to go to university. My grandmother left school as a child, could not read or write, worked from a young age, and later made sure all her children received an education. That being said, I believe there is still some basic knowledge that should be emphasized from primary school. The following are some but not all the basic skills I feel should be added to all schooling curricula, especially in Africa.

Financial literacy
Learners should be taught about finances from a young age. When I say finances, I am not just talking about accounting, but what money is. Children should be taught the value of money and its uses. The history of money, the value, how you get it, how you grow it, and what affects its value.

The difference between saving and investing. What is inflation and what affects it? The relationship between time and money. What are the qualities for something to be considered money? The basics of budgeting and how this can be used in a wealth creation journey and how this affects retirement. Is credit important and what is it. These are basic skills that could improve ways of life if taught from a young age

Taxes
What are taxes? Most people do not know the answer to this question. You will sometimes hear people say my taxes are paying for your social grant or the government misuses taxpayers' money. Most people do not know what taxes are, why you pay, who pays, how to pay, where and when to pay, and what happens if you don’t pay? I must admit I also started getting a better understanding when I became a professional and from a course, I had at university. I think all learners should have basic knowledge of taxes by the time they leave grade 12.

Driving
I think schools should include driving basics and theory lessons as part of the high school curriculum. You may think this is not necessary because these are school kids who cannot afford cars. Alright, think of it this way, there is a student who is not interested in being a doctor or accountant. Maybe they are interested in the transportation industry and want a chance to be a truck driver as a start. Would it not be nice to have a learner's license by the time they finish school? After school, they can then go and obtain a driving license. This will reduce having adults who know nothing about car management and driving.

Time management
Knowing how to manage time will be a benefit in college/university and the work environment. University requires self-discipline and having time management basic skills will go a long way. Having time management skills will also improve work-life balance as an adult.

Mental awareness
In the age of social media, it has been very apparent what mental health issues young adults deal with. Most of this is a result of not having enough knowledge about mental health. Knowing techniques to deal with mental exhaustion could help a parent understand what their teenager is going through. It could mean being able to help a person going through a breakdown calm down and breathe. Whether it's using meditation or breathing exercises, I think mental health and awareness should be taught in schools from a young age.

If you are already a parent, the above are some things you can start teaching your children at home. If you want even more information, the internet and child-friendly books are good places to start.
